Thankful Thursdays: Mentors, a Kid-Free Day & Thai Food . . .

Gina & I @ SMASH Hollywood, CA

Happy Thursday everyone!!! This week is moving along nicely. I still feel like I have not gotten enough work done on my tech packs, but I have had some successful meetings and follow ups on important leads. Yesterday I had a great meeting with my mentor Gina Alexander. Whatever industry you are in, it is imperative to have a mentor. Someone you can trust, that is willing to lead and guide you through situations, idea implementation and other things that you may face on the day-to-day. Gina is a true blessing in my life and she is also proof that prayer is powerful. About a year ago I realized I was very isolated in my industry.  I had no “real” industry compadres. I prayed for a mentor and like-minded friends who I could share my journey with and not long after, I met Gina! We met via another dear friend (whom I also asked God to send to me) Loreta Washington, (I’ll have to share THAT story another time!- another answered prayer!!). Gina and I friended each other, on facebook, but it wasn’t until about a year later, when we reconnected at her Handbag Designer Lab, that our friendship really blossomed. God is great!!!

Anyway, on Wednesday, Rob took the kiddies to Abuela’s and we had a kid-free day!!! (Those are rare in these parts!) After his morning workshop we had the day to do with as we pleased. It was such a great day. Almost felt like we went back in time! We visited all our old haunts. We went to Santa Monica, I still had not seen the not-so-newly-anymore renovated Santa Monica Place Mall. This was the mall I grew up in. I spent many a day there after school. We walked the Promenade (another of my youthful haunts) although in those days it was nothing like it is now! (ie: homeless people, Thom McCann and Woolworth’s) In many ways, I prefer the old promenade, however, It felt good to be back home.

After Santa Monica we drove to Hollywood to our favorite Thai restaurant, Torung. Best. Thai. Food. Ever!!!!! A great ending to a much-needed day alone with the hubby.

Thankful Thursdays: The First Day of Summer Vacay!!!!

SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE in our household!!!! Today is the last day of school for the biscuits. I can’t believe how fast this school year went!! I am now officially the mother of a 1st and 2nd grader!! Seems just yesterday I was pushing around that uncooperative double stroller, self-consciously hogging up aisles and running over the backs of people’s flip-flops in the mall. Yeah, you know me. I’m sure you’ve met me before. It wasn’t that I was trying to be annoying, my stroller just had a mind of its own, and try as I might, it never did comply. It was probably angry that it had to lug around that 2nd seat. Probably longed to be a one-seater. Nevertheless, it served it’s purpose, and I got my revenge when I folded it up for the last time (or tried to, it never did want to fold up without a fight) and stuffed it in my garage. Rob later donated it to one of the mothers at his school. (Poor woman, didn’t know what she was getting into. I pray she was blessed by it and left unharmed by it’s stubbornness). Anyway, today I am thankful for the start of another summer with my babies. I am ready to dive into this summer with my family. I look forward to learning, experiencing, seeing, traveling, watching, laughing and loving with my tribe.

Happy Thursday guys!! I am working in LA today. The sun is peeking through the clouds promising to shed a little light and warmth on things, which I am grateful for. Life is good. ☺

Thankful Thursdays: Natural Progression

Life in Pictures | April 2012

Good morning friends, Happy Thursday! This month is proving to be another busy one! Great things are happening with my business, and I am readying my line for an August/September launch. I am very excited, but there is still much work to be done. The next two weeks I will be deep in the depths of research and product development. I hope you will be patient with me. Of course I have every intention of keeping my regular (or should I say semi-regular) blogging schedule, although . . . you know what they say about good intentions!!! 🙂 Anyway, I am thankful today for  baby steps. Putting one foot in front of the other in spite of any apprehension or uneasiness I may be feeling . . . Keeping it short and sweet today guys. Make it a fabulous one!! xo

Thankful Thursdays: The Gift of Blogging

Life is such a blessing! I am in awe of the people and ideas I come across in my traipses through the blogosphere. The world of blogging is bringing me in contact with other like-minded women who are spreading their gifts of inspiration, encouragement and dialogue one post at a time. I find it hard not to delight in the recognition that we are able to create a community of support, open dialogue on issues that touch our hearts, and encouragement toward the following of our passions. Those were three of my personal goals for starting this blog, and today I am thankful that I can see it taking place before my eyes!!! This week I was blessed to stumble upon three blog posts that touched me. Neki Bosh, of they’rejustclothes.com, presented beautiful photos and posed a question that is very near and dear to my heart in her post on Black Fashion History-Black Beauty Icons. Maylana, of Maylana’s Closet had me talking out loud to my screen in agreement with her post, Leave Adele Alone . . .  and stumbling across Clutterbox Creative’s illustrations and reading about her journey to follow her passion made me reach out to her, because I could relate to the decision of finally deciding to JUST DO IT!!! (The fact that I fell in love with her illustrations was icing on the cake!) Well, today I want to thank each of these women for touching my lives by just being themselves. It is a great thing to note that you don’t have to be famous, you don’t have to fit into the stereotypes our society has placed before us, and you don’t have to have a lot of money. The beauty of blogging, and life in general, is that we can touch people through our own circles of influence, and blogging can be a wonderful way to enlarge the territory of your circle.

What have you been touched by this week?

Thankful Thursdays: The Job I Love.

Today is one of those days where I have about 5 different lists on my desk and 10 post-it notes on each list. Everything needs to be completed yesterday, and even though I feel slightly overwhelmed, I am doing the job I love. Each phone call, vendor inquiry, appointment scheduled, sketch approved, and item crossed off my list puts me that much closer to my dream. I am thankful for the opportunity to create my future and grow my business.

Thankful Thursdays: Slow & Steady Wins the Race

Ayanna Listenbee Allegra Hobo

This is an image of one of my newest styles. Her name is Allegra (which is also my daughter’s middle name). I’m posting a picture of her for Thankful Thursdays because she represents a milestone in a long journey. I am still on the path to turning my dreams into reality, but I realize that each day that I am active in taking steps toward my goals, I am that much happier and that much closer to my goals. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs on this journey, but looking back, I would not change any of them. As I move forward, I can see and feel myself becoming stronger. Each day presents a learning opportunity, and an opportunity to use the knowledge I have gained from the days prior. Best of all, each new day carries with it a chance to create and change my future. This is truly a daily gift that I sometimes forget to be thankful for.

What are the little things that you are thankful for in your daily journey?

Thankful Thursdays: Celebrating the Little Things

Life is made up of moments. Some good, some amazing, some . . . not so great, yet all are irreplaceable. With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, the festive feeling of the holiday season has made me pensive— in a good way! Around this time of year, things tend to get a little hectic in our household. So, I’ve decided to set aside Thursdays @ The LookBook Philosophy as a day to slow down, stop and share a moment of thanks. It doesn’t have to be anything monumental. Just a way to share a moment, a word, or photo of something I am grateful for that might otherwise be lost in the hustle and bustle of the day.
